Alcatel expands One Touch smartphone line with Idol Alpha, Hero

updated 06:21 am EDT, Wed September 4, 2013

Pico Projector, e-ink cover offered as accessories for new phablet

Alcatel has revealed two new additions to its One Touch line of smartphones. The One Touch Idol Alpha is a mid-ranged smartphone which uses light-up edges, while the One Touch Hero offers a large display, a substantial battery, and a number of accessories including an e-ink cover and a Pico Projector made specifically for the big-screen smartphone.

The One Touch Idol Alpha uses a 4.7-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1280x720. Inside is a quad-core 1.2GHz processor with 16GB of storage, 1GB of RAM, and a 2,000mAh battery, according to Slashgear, with a rear-facing 12.1-megapixel camera, a front-facing 1.3-megapixel version, and Dragontrail Glass with an Oleophobic coating on the front. Offering connections over UMTS and quad-band GSM,

Using a large 6-inch 1080p display, also with an Oleophpbic coating, the One Touch Hero boasts a faster quad-core processor running at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM, and a choice of 8GB or 16GB storage models. A battery capacity of 3,400mAh, DNLA, Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS, with options for HD Voice and NFC support are also included in the phablet, as well as 13-megapixel and 2-megapixel cameras and stylus support.

While the One Touch Hero appears to be a decent mobile device on its own, Alcatel has opted to add in a number of interesting accessories. An e-ink cover will allow for the reading of ebooks, web pages, and various notifications, while a second MagicFlip cover will provide notifications through embedded LEDs. Taking its cue from the HTC Mini, a Bluetooth accessory phone will provide basic functionality without needing to pull the larger device from a pocket, while a Pico Projector made for the One Touch Hero will project a 70-inch image from the device at a brightness of 12 lumens.

Alcatel has yet to provide potential release dates and cost for the two devices, though it is believed they will be shipping in the next few months.
