Cross platform development expected, SDK released before end of 2013
At Qualcomm's Uplinq event held earlier today, the company announced media streaming protocol Qualcomm AllPlay. The new effort by Qualcomm is a cross-platform streaming solution to make it simple for "media equipment makers and content providers to deliver wireless streaming of local and cloud-based content across brands or platforms enabled by the AllPlay solution" according to the company.
The protocol is based on Qualcomm's AllJoyn open source framework also used with the Toq smart watch. Through AllPlay, music providers can use one SDK for app development, develop for both the iOS and Android, and offer wireless streaming of both local and cloud-based content to audio devices enabled by the AllPlay solution.
Hardware manufacturers who choose to adopt the AllPlay protocol are provided a Wi-Fi framework, multi-zone and party-mode synchronization, cross-platform controller apps and SDKs, native integration in popular music services' mobile apps, and local and cloud-based content streaming with support for high-resolution/lossless audio.
Little firm data about the initiative has been revealed, including what cost, if any, hardware licensees must pay. The AllPlay SDK is expected to be released before the end of 2013.
