Reader offers new display, faster processor

Amazon has formally introduced its new Paperwhite e-book reader, after the device was listed and quickly pulled from the company's inventory earlier today. Customers can place preorders for the basic model, which costs $119 with a September 30 shipping estimate, while the 3G edition jumps to $189 with expected availability in early November.

The refreshed device maintains the same overall appearance as its predecessor, however the company has upgraded many of the components. The display is said to offer higher contrast and better reflectivity, along with enhanced low-light readability thanks to a new lighting system. A faster processor promises quicker page turns, which also benefit from increased touch sensitivity and accuracy.

Amazon also focused on the software experience, adding a new "page flip" feature to quickly skim through books. Other additions include an enhanced dictionary and Wikipedia access and a vocabulary list tool, with Goodreads integration on the way in the near future.

The company markets the Paperwhite as "the best device for reading, period." Electronic paper readers have come under increasing competition from color-display tablets, however, including Amazon's own Kindle Fire series of 7.0- and 8.9-inch Android tablets, though the company tries to keep its sales numbers confidential.
