Galaxy Gear gets tipped before Sept. 4 reveal

Ahead of a confirmed September 4 unveiling new images have emerged on the Internet showing off a prototype Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. VentureBeat got a look at the prototype device, which it says had been shipped out to developers and a few select partners. Samsung, reportedly, will make a big push at positioning Galaxy Gear as a fitness companion.

The device shown in the images -- taken from a promotional video -- features a three-inch diagonal OLED display, and VentureBeat's Christina Farr describes its wristband as "clunky and masculine," though not heavy. It also, according to the images, has a square screen with large bezels at the top and bottom, giving the display itself a somewhat chunky appearance.

The Galaxy Gear sports Bluetooth connectivity, as well as Wi-Fi for Internet access, even when not connected to a smartphone. It also has a 4MP camera built into the strap, as well as tiny speakers in the clasp.

The device also features Samsung's S Voice feature for voice commands, and it comes loaded with an assortment of Android apps for social media and health tracking. Currently, it is said to pair mainly with Samsung Galaxy devices, but it may also be interoperable with non-Samsung phones and tablets.

Users swipe the screen in order to access apps, the camera, and the photo gallery. The device also retains a log of calls coming in to a paired phone. It is said to have in excess of 10 hours of battery life,.

Previous leaks have shown off other aspects of the Galaxy Gear's features, including a "Find my watch" option and a number of clock faces. Samsung will officially reveal the device on Wednesday, alongside the next iteration of its Galaxy Note smartphone.
