WIMM entered 'confidential relationship' with another company in summer 2012

Google has confirmed that it acquired smart watch manufacturer WIMM Labs, possibly as early as the summer of 2012. Shortly after launching the WIMM One, the company put a message up on its site noting that it was in "an exclusive, confidential relationship" for the company, and ceased sales of its developer preview kit.

According to the initial report of the acquisition at GigaOM, most of the WIMM staff is employed by the search engine giant, and they are working in the Android development group. Google has no official remarks on the future of the company, but the expertise of the company that specializes in smaller devices than smartphones was likely used in the development of Google Glass, which began around the same time as the WIMM "closure."

The WIMM One developer kit sold for $300, and included a 36x32mm main module, a wrist watch strap mount, watch faces, and pre-loaded micro-apps that included a calendar, weather, a timer, and a world clock.

The kit paired with Android, BlackBerry and iOS devices, and includes both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios. An accelerometer and magnetometer are likewise built-in, and allow motion tracking. The device can be managed using a desktop browser or through other mobile devices, and is still supported by WIMM.
