Verizon joins carriers blocking off expected iPhone launch weekend

updated 01:31 pm EDT, Fri August 30, 2013

Carrier seeing low iPhone 5 stocks

Verizon is blocking its retail store workers from taking vacations between September 18th and the 22nd, sources say. The move follows blackouts by AT&T and T-Mobile targeting the same approximate window. Apple is widely forecast to launch two iPhones that weekend: a high-end 5S, and a mid-tier 5C. While the 5C could be little more than an iPhone 5 with a plastic shell, the 5S is expected to get a better camera, a faster processor, a fingerprint sensor, and a new gold color option.

The sources also indicate that Verizon is beginning to run out of iPhone 5 stock. 32 and 64GB models are reportedly at low levels, although the supply of 16GB units is stable.

Some rumors have suggested that Apple plans to double standard capacities for the 5S, pushing the high end up to 128GB. Smartphone storage has remained largely static at Apple and other cellphone companies during the past few years. Many phone lines are split between 16 and 32GB options, with just a few offering 8 or 64GB, and none at all offering 128GB except through microSD cards.
