Hawaiian Airlines to offer iPad mini for in-flight entertainment

updated 09:43 pm EDT, Thu August 29, 2013

Tablet will offer on-demand viewing of 100 of the latest movies and shows

US-based Hawaiian Airlines is set to offer the Apple iPad mini to passengers on its 767-300 fleet. The initiative equips 14 planes with the technology by September 1, with 1,400 tablets being distributed to cover the hub routes from Honolulu to the American mainland, along with other locations in the South Pacific on 14 routes.

Blaine Miyasato, Hawaiian Airlines vice president of product development, said that "with the help of Bluebox Avionics, we're building on our acclaimed in-flight service by incorporating the latest in popular consumer tech products to enhance our in-flight entertainment options."

Through the mini, users will be able to view over 100 hours of video, though it wasn't clarified if the iPad mini rental included Internet access or not. The seat-back video displays will be retained, and used in conjunction with the iPad option.

The service is being offered free to passengers in Business class seating. Economy passengers need to reserve the device at the gate for $17 per flight. Typical flights from west coast airports to Hawaii last around five to six hours.
