GameStick game console heads to backers, reaches retail September 30th

PlayJam hopes to avoid same late console delivery issue as Ouya

The GameStick Android game console has started shipping to backers on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. PlayJam also revealed that the portable game system will be available to buy at retail stores and websites with a tentative global release date of September 30th, following an initial pilot test run on the system's controllers.

Much like similar Kickstarter project the Ouya, the GameStick has had its fair share of delays, writes The Verge. Backers were originally meant to receive their consoles by April, with the extra demand pushing the launch to June, a deadline PlayJam also could not keep to. PlayJam is also trying to get consoles to backers before it opens up retail sales, something which Ouya failed to do, forcing it to later provide Ouya store credit as compensation.

The console is made up of a controller and the GameStick itself, which fits into a cavity at the top of the controller unit. The HDMI dongle, running on an ARM Cortex A9 processor with a Mali 400 GPU, includes 8GB of expandable online storage, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, and the ability to use four controllers on one device. Just as with the Ouya, it offers its own online store for games separate to the Google Play store, but it remains to be seen whether or not it will suffer from the same teething troubles.
