Flickr iOS app adds live filters, new shooting, editing options

App takes aim at Instragram

Photo service Flickr has posted a major update of its iPhone app. The release comes with a new set of filters, which can also be previewed live while shooting images. Filters can moreover be customized, in order to produce specific effects.

During shooting, other new options include composition grids, a pinch-to-zoom gesture, and focus and exposure locks. After the fact users can now perform editing, adjusting elements like cropping, sharpening, levels, and vignetting.

The Flickr app is a free download and requires iOS 5.1 or later. Many of the changes appear aimed at making Flickr more competitive with rival photo services, namely Facebook's Instagram, which made its name based on filters.
