Apple searches for plastics engineer to work on iPhones, iPads

updated 03:59 pm EDT, Wed August 28, 2013

Hints at changes to external designs

Apple is hunting for a senior materials engineer to work on plastics for the iPhone and iPad, according to a new job listing. The person will be assigned to the iPhone/iPad Materials team, and must have "extensive experience in plastic material properties, part design and fabrication." Although Apple devices have some plastic internal parts, the listing indicates that external aesthetics will be a focus.

The job may be related to Apple's new mid-tier iPhone lineup, beginning with the iPhone 5C. The 5C is Apple's first iPhone since the 3GS to use a plastic back. Apple could conceivably bring plastic backs to future iPads, but the models anticipated this fall are believed to still use aluminum.
