Google slashes $100 off the Nexus 4, paves way for rumored Nexus 5

updated 05:48 am EDT, Wed August 28, 2013

Google Nexus 4 now starting from $199, could signal imminent Nexus 5

Google has slashed the price off the Nexus 4 by $100, or 25 percent, fueling speculation that it is clearing inventory for the launch of the rumored Nexus 5. The Nexus 4 was launched in late October last year and was the first device to debut Android 4.2 'Jelly Bean.' Both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the Nexus 4 have received the price cut, with the reductions available in the US, Canada, Australia, Korea, Spain and the UK.

The Nexus 4 remains one of the best deals on the market in the smartphone segment with the new cuts making it a tempting proposition. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and matched with 2GB of RAM. It centers on a 4.7-inch 720p IPS display protected by Gorilla Glass 2. It packs an 8-megapixel camera on the rear, while wireless connectivity includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11n, 3G and speeds up to HSPDA+ 42Mbps.

Like the Nexus 4, LG is tipped to have worked with Google on developing the rumored Nexus 5. Early indications suggest that the Nexus 5 will follow in the footsteps of the Nexus 4 and be based on an LG flagship device. In this case, all indications point to the Nexus 5 being based on the LG G2. This would mean that it could feature a 1080p 5.2-inch IPS display, be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz and ship with the long-rumored Android 5.0 'Key Lime Pie' on board.
