First major job losses at Sprint since Softbank became majority shareholder
National carrier Sprint is letting go of 800 employees from its customer support section, the first major reduction in staff since Softbank acquired a majority stake in the carrier in July. Most staff affected by the change have already been warned about the loss of jobs, with the remainder of the employee cull apparently being informed next month.
Sprint spokeswoman Jennifer Schuler told All Things D that the reduction in customer support staff stems from the company receiving fewer support calls ever since it improved its satisfaction with customers. "As customer satisfaction improves and in turn calls to customer care decrease, our staffing needs in this area decrease," said Schuler, before advising that the move helps keep "our costs in line with these efficiencies." The company is not planning other large-scale cuts nor companywide layoffs, but is still hiring in areas "that support our corporate strategy."
Sprint currently employs around 40,000 people across the entire company, a figure that the carrier hopes to stay at for some time in the future.
