HTC reportedly creating own mobile operating system for China market

updated 04:01 pm EDT, Wed August 28, 2013

Discussions between HTC and Chinese government over mobile OS touted

HTC is working on its own mobile operating system for China, according to a report. The mobile OS, said to be monitored by HTC chairwoman Cher Wang, would have close integration with China-centric apps and web services, such as Weibo, and could potentially make an appearance on HTC mobile devices by the end of this year.

The project, reported by sources of the Wall Street Journal, is said to be part of China's efforts to compete against US technology companies , with HTC apparently in discussions with Chinese government officials over the software. By creating software for the China market, it would in theory help wean Chinese businesses away from Western software systems, with the technology ministry in the country claiming that the mobile industry relied too heavily on Android.

Smartphones running the China-specific mobile OS are apparently being tested, with some prototypes being sent to Chinese government officials. If HTC can succeed in getting the government on-board with the software, then it could help the phone manufacturer ship a far higher number of devices than it currently offers, especially if the government pushes for its use in its communications.

HTC has thought about creating its own mobile operating system for some time, with murmurings of an OS from the company surfacing as early as April 2010.
