BlackBerry allegedly considering making BBM service a subsidiary

updated 03:39 pm EDT, Tue August 27, 2013

Making BlackBerry Messenger independent could help sale prospects

BlackBerry is considering moving the BlackBerry Messenger service into its own subsidiary, according to a report. The move by the troubled phone manufacturer would in theory give BBM the ability to work more independently from the rest of the BlackBerry business, at a time when the company is working to roll out BBM onto other platforms, such as iOS and Android.

The subsidiary would be called BBM Inc., according to sources of the Wall Street Journal, with the eventual independent service becoming a more attractive proposition for potential buyers compared to how the company currently operates. BlackBerry executives have apparently been moved over to the BBM team, which is also said to be working on a number of other initiatives, including a desktop client for BBM and video chatting.

Earlier this month, BlackBerry formed a Special Committee that would investigate "possible joint ventures, strategic partnerships, or alliances, a sale of the company, or other transactions" in order to rescue its current financial situation. It is not known if spinning BBM into its own company was an idea brought up by the group, or was proposed by executives earlier.
