Over-the-air update gives Apple TV apps from Vevo, Disney, others

updated 10:57 am EDT, Tue August 27, 2013

Apple continues channel-centric expansion of Apple TV

Apple has pushed a silent update to the Apple TV, adding a number of extra apps to the set-top. As anticipated, one of the them is Vevo's music video service. Also new though are Disney Channel and Disney XD, the Weather Channel, and an app from the Smithsonian.

The update continues a recent pattern of adding channels from broadcast networks to the Apple TV, instead of just more online services. Apple is thought to be pursuing a new app-based strategy toward building content for a TV set and/or a pay service. The company is still negotiating with cable providers though, and may integrate Time Warner support into the Apple TV in the near future.

Roku has had a Vevo channel for quite a while and it's terrific. I'm still not going for an AppleTV until it provides full PLEX support and not some kludge.

I think there's about zero chance that the Apple TV will ever support Plex.

Short of Apple buying Plex, EstaNightShift is right. The "kludge" is coming from Plex, not Apple.
