Samsung Galaxy S5 to feature 16MP camera with optical stabilization?

updated 01:30 pm EDT, Mon August 26, 2013

First S5 rumors on the heels of S4 launch

Alleged details of Samsung's next-generation Galaxy S handset are already surfacing in early rumors, just months after the Galaxy S4 was released to the public. A report in Korea's Electronic Times News, later spotted by BGR, claims the S5 will feature a 16-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization (OIS).

The company's wireless division is said to be producing a 16-megapixel module for use in smartphones and other small mobile electronics, with a backside-illuminated CMOS sensor produced by Sony. The components were reportedly intended for the Galaxy Note 3, however such integration was delayed due to supply issues.

"The OIS function is implemented in the auto focus (AF) actuator, but the supply of the OIS AF actuator is not smooth yet. Korea's Hysonic and Jahwa Electronics and Japan's Mitsumi are the only companies which successfully developed the OIS AF actuator. However, the OIS AF production capacity of Korean companies will be greatly increased early next year," the report says.

Testing on the new camera module is expected to begin early in 2014, ahead of an anticipated Galaxy S5 launch later in the year.
