Google: Chromecast SDK in early stages, local streaming possible soon

updated 04:46 pm EDT, Mon August 26, 2013

Developer claimed SDK change blocking local streaming intentional

Google has refuted developer Koushik Dutta's claims that the company hobbled its SDK for the Chromecast intentionally, preventing the HDMI stick from streaming locally-stored content. Google now claims that the change wasn't a swipe at Dutta's app, or similar functionality, and the company hopes that future versions of the Google Cast SDK will allow the ability to play a user's own videos.

Where there was some original confusion on what Google would allow the device to do, a statement to The Verge has clarified the search engine giant's intention somewhat. The company claims that it is "excited to bring more content to Chromecast and would like to support all types of apps, including those for local content. It's still early days for the Google Cast SDK, which we just released in developer preview for early development and testing only. We expect that the SDK will continue to change before we launch out of developer preview, and want to provide a great experience for users and developers before making the SDK and additional apps more broadly available."

Dutta has confessed that he reverse engineered the Google Cast transmission and reception protocols to make his "AllCast" application possible, which in itself is a violation of the developer's agreement.
