Motorola prepping Moto X Developer Edition with unlockable bootloader

Motorola has quietly revealed a Developer Edition of its new flagship Moto X smartphone. The new device will get a unique appearance with a black front and white rear panel as well as silver highlights around the camera bezel and on the volume and power controls. It will also carry special branding on the rear, while shipping in standard trim with 32GB of RAM on board as well as an "unlockable" bootloader.

Unlike some devices labeled as Developer Editions, the Moto X bootloader appears as though it will ship locked by default, requiring a certain degree of knowledge to unlock the device. It also appears that the act of unlocking the device will then also void the manufacturer warranty on the device, but it will allow users to install custom ROMs on the device if they choose. However, should something go wrong, and a user's device becomes bricked, they will have no recourse with Motorola.

Beyond the subtle design touches and the inclusion of an unlockable bootloader, the device continues with the same specifications. Its custom Motorola X8 chipset incorporates 8 processing cores, which include a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro dual-core chip clocked at 1.7GHz with quad-core Adreno 320 GPU, along with a natural language processor and contextual computing processor. This combination gives the device some unique capabilities including the ability to respond to voice commands when in sleep mode, and show discrete notifications on the display without powering up the entire display panel.

No pricing details are available at this time, although the Moto X Developer Edition is listed as "coming soon."
