Report: Google buys augmented reality patents from Hon Hai Precision

updated 05:15 pm EDT, Fri August 23, 2013

Technology purchased clearly aimed at improving Google Glass

Hon Hai Precision Industry, perhaps better known as the parent company of Foxconn, claims that it has sold Google a large swath of augmented reality patents. The patents cover a computer-generated image superimposed over a static or moving real-world image, and that the technique is commonly used in aviation, gaming, and training. No financial details of the deal are known.

Hon Hai is attempting to focus on monetizing technologies in its portfolio, and expand other aspects of its business, as it tries to reduce reliance on frequent client Apple. The company claims to have applied for 55,000 patent rights, with 10 percent having been granted to the company.

The technology Google purchased is clearly intended for Google Glass improvements. Neither Hon Hai nor Google have commented on the patent buy.
