Sony Xperia Z1 takes aim at the Samsung Galaxy S4

Sony has teased its Xperia Z1 again, this time focusing on the water resistant capabilities of the device. The campaign surrounding this new flagship smartphone has also been noticeable ramped up compared to its previous smartphones, suggesting that the company is gunning for a much larger chunk of the Android market currently dominated by Samsung. Specifications compiled from numerous leaks ahead of its launch suggest that it may have the hardware to pose a more significant challenge that it has in the past.

In addition to being water resistant and dust resistant with IP 55 and IP 58 ratings, it will also use a premium carbon fiber frame, Dragontrail tempered glass protection on the front and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the rear. It will also center on a much improved 1080p Triluminos 5-inch display, while also ramping up its photographic credentials with a 20.7-megapixel camera that utilizes a Exmor RS CMOS sensor with an f/2.3 aperture. It also uses a discrete BIONZ image processor with the ability to shoot video in the new Ultra HD 4K standard.

Users can also look forward to high-end processing performance supplied by its Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip clocked at 2.3GHz, which is matched with 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 330 GPU. A large 3100mAH battery will help to keep it powering on through the day, while Sony also incorporates a Stamina-mode that helps conserve power by turning off data transmission when in stand-by if a user selects it. Connectivity includes MHL, Miracast, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, 4G LTE, and Wi-Fi 802.11ac. A launch event is scheduled for September 4 ahead of IFA Berlin. [via Phone Arena]
