Omate TrueSmart smartwatch Kickstarter smashes goal in opening days

updated 07:45 am EDT, Fri August 23, 2013

Crowdfunded smartwatch touts built-in 3G data connection, 5MP camera

Another smartwatch has taken crowdfunding platform Kickstarter by storm, beating its initial $100,000 funding request within its opening days. The Omate TrueSmart is billed as a "truly standalone water-resistant smartwatch" that is able to work independently of smartphones, thanks to its built-in 3G connection.

Water resistant to IP67 standards, the TrueSmart offers a 1.5-inch 240x240-resolution LCD touchscreen, powered by a 1.3GHz dual-core processor with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of expandable storage. Running on Android 4.2, it is said to offer connectivity to a smartphone over Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi, as well as using a cellular network. A 5-megapixel camera, voice recognition, GPS, and a 600mAh battery said to last for up to 100 hours on standby are also included.

Expected to start shipping in November of this year, Omate has managed to run out of its initial $179 tier, with the $189 and $199 tiers remaining for standard versions of the device. It's current funding level of over $242,000 with 28 days remaining gives it a good chance of reaching close to the $10.2 million in funding that the Pebble smartwatch achieved.
