Google launches Helpouts video support on invite-only basis

updated 06:49 am EDT, Wed August 21, 2013

Video support system to offer free, chargeable sessions from experts

Google has quietly launched a version of its Hangouts video conferencing system for support services. Helpouts will allow professionals and skilled individuals to offer advice and support for a number of subjects over video and audio to their customers, with the addition of charging a fee to the viewer for the support session.

While it is currently on an invite-only basis to those "with expertise across a number of topics," according to TechCrunch, those not currently invited can supply their details to Google to be included in the future. Current subjects being catered for by the service are filed under categories including Home & Garden, Computers & Electronics, Health & Counseling, and Education, though it is said that Google is working with HireRight to make sure that experts in health-related areas are vetted before offering their services.

Sessions can be offered for free, but Google will take a 20-percent fee for paid support services, including card transaction and fees associated with Google Wallet. It will also offer a "100-percent Money Back Guarantee" for services provided.
