Site subjects 'iPhone 5C' shell to measurements, durability tests

Shows device as more scratch-resistant

A Taiwanese publication has performed a variety of tests on what it says is a shell for the iPhone 5C. To gauge the shell's durability, Apple Daily says it put the shell in a plastic bag with a key and some coins, which it then shook hard to simulate sitting in a pocket or a purse. The site says there were no visible scratches, and that the shell scored a high 8H ranking on a pencil hardness test.

Under calipers the 5C reportedly measures 124.55mm tall and 59.13mm wide, making it slightly larger than the iPhone 5. The device is said to be 8.98mm thick, but that may not be accurate, since to get the figure the shell was paired with a front panel that juts out somewhat. The panel may not have been properly embedded.

Also shown in the Daily's story is an image of an alleged shell for the iPhone 5S with an unexpected blue tint. Although the 5C shell appears consistent with earlier leaks, no 5S shell has been seen in blue, raising doubts about its authenticity.
