Offers expected to be made quietly to handful of customers
Some AT&T stores will be offering refurbished models of the iPhone 3GS to prepaid GoPhone subscribers, a source says. The carrier reportedly won't be displaying the phone or advertising it in any way, but some sales clerks are expected to offer it to people who can't afford more expensive hardware. The source adds that while not all AT&T stores will have the 3GS in stock, larger urban centers should have sufficient quantities.
The 3GS is presently in a state of limbo. It can still be found in some quarters, but the phone dates back to 2009, and Apple discontinued production when it launched the iPhone 5. It can run iOS 6, but doesn't support some features and will be completely unsupported in iOS 7. The device should be extremely cheap for GoPhone customers though, since the iPhone 4 is now just $325 unlocked.
