Asus reveals industry's first Thunderbolt 2 motherboard

updated 04:47 pm EDT, Wed August 21, 2013

New Z87 Deluxe/Quad motherboard features 16 USB ports, Thunderbolt 2

Asus has revealed the Z87-Deluxe/Quad, the first motherboard with Thunderbolt 2 technology certified by Intel. Based on the new Intel Z87 chipset and ready for the latest fourth-generation "Haswell" Intel Core processors, the ASUS Z87-Deluxe/Quad ATX motherboard has a pair of Thunderbolt 2 ports for connecting up to 12 devices at once. Each port has up to 20Gbit/s transfer rate and is backward-compatible with the original Thunderbolt specification.

The original Thunderbolt standard has four separate transfer channels -- two upstream and two downstream -- with a maximum transfer rate of 10Gbit/s per channel. Thunderbolt 2 combines these four channels with the new Falcon Ridge controller into two 20Gbit/s bi-directional channels, which are four times faster than the theoretical maximum of USB 3.0. Together with DisplayPort 1.2 support, this enables Thunderbolt 2 to simultaneously deliver high-resolution video to the latest 4K/2K (4096 x 2160) displays and communicate with other bandwidth-hungry devices, such as hard drives. With the onboard HDMI port, ASUS Z87-Deluxe/Quad can drive three 4K UHD displays at once.

Ports included on the motherboard include the pair of Thunderbolt 2 ports, one HDMI port, four DIMM slots, three PCI-e 3.0 x16 slots, 10 SATA-3 6Gbit per second ports, eight USB 3.0 ports and eight USB 2.0 ports. The Z87 Deluxe/Quad is an ATX form factor board. Pricing and availability are not yet known.
