Google Maps iOS, Android apps build in Waze incident reports

updated 10:03 am EDT, Tue August 20, 2013

Waze Map Editor gets Google satellite and Street View imagery

Google has updated its iOS and Android Maps apps with real-time incident reports culled from Waze. The alerts, submitted by Waze users, can include things like accidents, construction, road closures, and other factors affecting traffic. Only some countries have access to the data in Maps though, namely Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Germany, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Switzerland, the UK and the US.

Conversely, Waze's own iOS and Android apps are getting Google Search functions. The Waze Map Editor is incorporating Google satellite and Street View imagery, which should make it easier for people to build out Waze's coverage and fix any mistakes.

Google bought out Waze earlier this summer. The deal could be worth as much as $1.1 billion, but the FTC has been looking into it in the possibility that it represents illegal anti-competitive behavior.
