Google updates Android YouTube app with in-app multitasking, card UI

updated 06:12 am EDT, Tue August 20, 2013

Videos can be minimized for searching while playing

Google has updated its YouTube app for Android with a number of new additions. The revised version 5.0 of the video app, gradually rolling out over Google Play, introduces the card user interface style found in other Google products along with other visual tweaks, as well as in-app multitasking and reworked navigation.

The new app, spotted by Android Police, allows the user to minimize a video to a small window on the bottom right by swiping or pressing a down arrow. Users can then navigate the app while the video is still playing, and can restore the video by tapping or dragging it. The slide-out navigation is updated with quick access to history, favorites, playlists, uploads, and watch later options, along with a new look. Chromecast use has also been changed, with a new thumbnail image with video description, and the option to play it now or add it to the Chromecast video queue.

While the new version rolls out today to Android, it is not clear when the same changes will be applied to the iOS or other versions of the app.
