Samsung Galaxy Gear, dual-core 2.5-inch display, for Galaxy phones-only

The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch expected to be unveiled on September for ahead of IFA Berlin has had its specifications leak out. According to Gigaom, the device will sport a multitouch 2.5-inch 320x320 OLED display and be powered by a dual-core processor clocked as high as 1.5GHz. Like the rumored Apple iWatch, the Samsung Galaxy Gear will also include health sensors designed to tie in to the health-based apps that feature on the Galaxy S4.

To help conserve power, the Galaxy Gear is said to use an accelerometer that will turn the display on when a user moves their arm upwards to check the time. It will also use the low-power Bluetooth 4.0 specification further helping to conserve power. At the same time, Samsung is also said to be loading up the capabilities of the Galaxy Gear with NFC-connectivity for one-touch syncing as well as integrating small speakers into the clasp of the wristband.

Certain developers that have had early access to the Galaxy Gear have also revealed that the smartwatch is running Android 4.1 'Jelly Bean,' with some also running Android 4.2 'Jelly Bean' as well. This will help to enable tight integration with a companion smartphone including. For example, a user could check an email on their smartwatch, which will automatically trigger the connected smartphone to open the email on their smartphone.

However, developers that Gigaom has been in contact with have highlighted the possibility that the Galaxy Gear may not work with any Android-based smartphone, but may require a Samsung Galaxy-branded smartphone or tablet to function fully (or at all). In a sign that Samsung is moving away from the openness of Android, and its reliance on Google, apps designed for the smartwatch may only be able to be downloaded from Samsung's own app store.
