New Mac Pro set for 'Fall 2013' release in movie theater teaser

updated 07:15 pm EDT, Mon August 19, 2013

Trailer reveals slightly firmer launch date than previous 'later this year'

A teaser ad now playing in cinemas in the US spotlights the forthcoming Mac Pro, with eyewitnesses saying the ad ends with the line "Fall 2013" instead of the previous "Later this year" tag that was given when the product was announced back in June. The placement of the ad -- likely intended to burnish Apple's reputation as a forward-thinking industry leader more than hype the pro-level (and likely pro-priced) Mac -- debuted in theatres this past weekend, and is said to be similar to the official teaser seen at WWDC.

Long overdue for a serious refresh, the new Mac Pro was announced at the Worldwide Developers' Conference in San Francisco as a completely rethought and redesigned product: a small, sleek, shiny black cylinder standing just 10 inches high, and yet said by Apple to be 2.5 times more powerful than its predecessor. It eschews the idea of internal expansion, and instead stocks the machine with a powerhouse processor (with up to 12 cores), dramatically faster RAM and two workstation-class GPUs, leaving expansion to be handled by an array of USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports.

The machine is said to be able to comfortably handle dual 4K monitors, making it already a hot commodity in the pro-video segment. Still, no specific debut date has emerged, and it is unlikely to be unveiled during an iOS-oriented event such as the expected iPhone 5S reveal, currently believed to be happening on September 10. Further, there has been no mention of pricing for the product, though it is speculated to retail at around the same price points as the present Mac Pro.
