Tesco rumored to launch own tablet for Christmas in United Kingdom

Claimed attempt by retailer to fight online retail media sales

British retailer Tesco is looking towards entering the tablet market with its own device. Though a rumored device, it is suggested that it will be a "high quality" tablet similar to the Amazon Kindle Fire and Google Nexus 7, with the hope that a tablet with a British brand name attached to it will help win over potential customers in the United Kingdom.

While the report from The Sunday Times does not go into detail about the tablet's specification, its sources state that it would be preloaded with apps for Tesco's online grocery and banking services, books, films, music, and take advantage of other relevant Tesco-owned services, such as its streaming video service, Blinkbox, or the Tesco Mobile cellular service. It is suggested that the tablet is the supermarket chain's attempt to regain custom lost to Amazon and Apple, which has eroded its in-store media sales for a number of years.

It is believed that Tesco will be aiming to release the tablet in time for Christmas, and could be priced similar to the cheapest Kindle Fire at 130 ($203).
