Second-gen iPad mini LCD production in line with last year's levels

IHS accounts may dispel notions of delay

Display production levels for the second-generation iPad mini are paralleling those of the first-gen model last year, says research firm IHS iSuppli. "Based [on what] we are seeing in the [production] pipeline...The volumes are similar to the iPad mini that we saw in Q4 of last year," explains one of the firm's directors, Vinita Jakhanwal. The claim would appear to dismiss rumors of delays pushing production back to November, and a launch even further.

Jakhanwal adds that he expects LG Display to be the main initial supplier of Retina displays for the new Mini, but notes that Sharp should also contribute. Other reports have indicated that Samsung will be a third supplier. Despite legal conflicts between the two corporations, Apple may need Samsung's help in order to produce enough Retina displays for an international launch.
