Microsoft returns YouTube app to Windows Phone store after takedown

updated 06:28 am EDT, Wed August 14, 2013

App reinstates Google advertising for YouTube videos

The YouTube app for Windows Phone has made a reappearance on the platform, following an advertising spat in May. The revised app now displays advertisements from Google that accompany YouTube videos, and also allows Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8 users to upload their own clips to the service.

The original Microsoft-created app was withdrawn after Google demanded its removal and remote disablement from user's phones, due to a combination of no advertisements and disregarding the YouTube terms of service by developing the app in the first place. At the time, Google noted that content creators "make money on YouTube by monetizing their content through advertising," continuing by accusing Microsoft of causing "harm to the thriving content ecosystem on YouTube."

In a new statement received by The Verge, Microsoft confirmed that it has re-released the app, "addressing the concerns Google expressed in May, including the addition of ads." Microsoft also appreciates the support from Google "in ensuring that Windows Phone customers have a quality YouTube experience and look forward to continuing the collaboration."

Voice search and home screen voice activation, playlist access, and profile management are all also included in the revised app.
