ZTE reportedly working on own mobile processors with 4G LTE support

updated 07:36 am EDT, Tue August 13, 2013

New ZTE processors to be shown in late September at Chinese event

ZTE is working on developing its own applications processor for smartphones, according to a report. The Chinese smartphone producer is alleged to be developing a chip for its future mobile devices, with the processor design said to use ARM cores and include support for 4G LTE connections, though no other major details have been revealed by the company.

Sources of China Communication Network at the company state that it will be the "first in the industry to attain 4G standards in communications and data throughput, heralding a breakthrough in 4G technology globally." Claimed to hold a 5-percent global market share in the second quarter of 2013, ZTE is believed to reveal more information about the potential processor at the PT/Expo Comm China event in Beijing on September 24th.

The move to making its own chip will potentially help ZTE in creating a more customized experience in its phones, as opposed to using the same processors typically used in other mainstream smartphone releases, such as those from Qualcomm and Nvidia. It also brings ZTE in line with some smartphone manufacturers that create and use their own processors, like Samsung's Exynos chips and Huawei's semiconductor unit, HiSilicon Technologies. If ZTE proceeds with the plan, the first smartphones from the producer using the chips could be going on sale on or just after the end of this year.
