Getty Museum releases 4,689 artworks as digital download, more to come

updated 05:59 pm EDT, Tue August 13, 2013

Images released herald of a new program for wider art availability

The renowned Getty Museum today launched an effort to "make available all images of public domain artworks in the Getty's collections." The museum has released 4,689 high-resolution images of the collection free to use, modify, and publish for any purpose. In exchange for the download, the museum requests a description of how the image will be used.

The images are very high resolution and "reproduction-quality" with embedded metadata, many over 100MB. The museum plans to release many more works of art to the public domain over time. Work is being performed on identifying any copyright and privacy restrictions on the collection to identify all the images that can be made available for download.

The museum calls the project an "educational imperative," saying that "Artists, students, teachers, writers, and countless others rely on artwork images to learn, tell stories, exchange ideas, and feed their own creativity."
