Sony 'Lens Camera' self-contained smartphone upgrade leaks again

updated 01:35 pm EDT, Mon August 12, 2013

Newer images show mounting plate, more detail of Lens Camera system

More details about a lens with a built-in camera from Sony have appeared in new leaks. The "Lens Camera" initially uncovered in mid-July is shown in new images attached via a clip-on mount to a smartphone, and will apparently be a massive upgrade to the image quality of the camera sensor typically associated with mobile devices.

Two Lens Cameras will be released, according to Sony Alpha Rumors. Both the DSC-QX10 and the DSC-QX100 will have a built-in camera sensor, Bionz processor, Wi-Fi, NFC connectivity, and an SD card slot. While it will not have an LCD or typical camera controls on the body itself, the accompanying camera app for both iOS and Android will allow the photographer to change the camera's settings, much like the remote apps usable with recent cameras.

One of the two models will use the same sensor and lens pairing from the Sony RX100 II, namely a 1-inch, 20.2-megapixel Exmor R sensor with a 2/1.8 Carl Zeiss lens. The other will sport an 18-megapixel CMOS sensor with a 10x zoom lens combination that will be similar to the Sony WX150.

Pricing and release dates remain unknown, though considering the style of images leaked, they could be launched sooner rather than later.

This is a very cool idea. This would be a great way to "cash in" on the success of competitors' phones without directly competing with them. It should be interesting to see how small the package gets when it's disconnected -- hopefully small enough to carry around in a different pants pocket without much bulk.

So, they've created an object the size of a camera that doesn't perform as well as a camera? If they can guarantee that my phone will also perform poorly, I'm sold!

I think this is an astoundingly stupid idea. It's not a lens you attach to your smartphone (as many people will no doubt think), it's an entire camera, shaped like a lens that you attach to your smartphone. You'd be far better off with an actual camera since you need to carry and pack both separately anyway. Also a real camera wouldn't be precariously attached to your smartphone with a plastic thingamajig.
