DPRK allegedly entering smartphone manufacturing with Android device

updated 04:23 pm EDT, Mon August 12, 2013

Kim Jong Un visits 'factory,' no specifications known

North Korean leader visited an alleged cellphone manufacturing plant in Pyongang, according to the state run Korean Central News Agency. Photos of the visit show the leader examining what is supposedly a natively designed and constructed Android-based phone, but no pictures of actual manufacturing facilities were released.

The phone, called "Arirang," has no definite specs, and has not been identified by the Android community as a known model as of yet. The visited "manufacturing plant" was used as a television manufacturing plant two years ago also in a visit by the DPRK leader at the time, also with no actual manufacturing being shown.

The official statement regarding the story is heavy in rhetoric, but details Kim Jong Un's approval of the device, calling its manufacture able to "instill national pride and self-respect" into the populace. Regional tech news watchdog North Korea Tech believes that the phones are "probably made to order by a Chinese manufacturer and shipped to the May 11 Factory where they are inspected before going on sale."
