Photos show front panel, digitizer for fifth-generation iPad

updated 09:40 am EDT, Fri August 9, 2013

Parts appear to match up with Mini-influenced rear shells

A repair firm, Macfixit Australia, is claiming to have obtained a front panel and digitizer assembly for the fifth-generation iPad. The parts have the same display area as the fourth-gen iPad, but appear to fall in line with recently-leaked rear shells, which use thinner side bezels taking after the iPad mini. There are also other, more technical differences.

There are now two connectors instead of one for instance, and those connectors have been changed from a flat flexible cable format -- used for earlier iPads -- to flexible printed circuits, as in the iPhone 4 and 5. Lending possible authenticity to the panel/digitizer assembly is the presence of a part number, 821-1892-02, that matches the style used in other Apple products.

Apple could announce a fifth-generation iPad as soon as next month, but even if so the company would likely want to stagger a launch after the debut of its new iPhone models. It may need multiple press events, especially if it intends to update Macs and the iPad mini as well.
