Canonical adjusts Ubuntu Edge price to reboot $32M crowdfunding drive

updated 12:59 pm EDT, Thu August 8, 2013

Price drop of Ubuntu smartphone caused through component negotiations

Canonical has adjusted its seemingly-underperforming crowdfunding campaign for an Ubuntu-powered smartphone for a second time, after a significant drop in new pledges. The company has removed the tiered prices of its first change, and now offers the Ubuntu Edge smartphone at a cost of $695 instead of its full $830 price, in an attempt to achieve its $32 million target.

So far, the campaign has managed to raise over $8.7 million at its halfway point, which could be considered an achievement by typical crowdfunding standards. While it managed to raise over $4 million in the project's opening days, it still needs to find another $23.2 million in the next 14 days in order to receive its funding and to go into production.

The sudden change in price to $695 per handset has been attributed to successful negotiations with component suppliers, rather than the reduction in specification or removal of device features. Canonical has also managed to gain its first sale of the $80,000 Enterprise Bundle, with Bloomberg agreeing to purchase the 100-device bundle.

The Ubuntu Edge has a 4.5-inch, 1280x720 display with sapphire crystal protection. Using a eight-megapixel low-light rear camera, 2-megapixel front-facing version, an unnamed multi-core processor with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, the smartphone boasts the ability to run both Android and Ubuntu when used as a smartphone, and will dock with a screen and peripherals to operate as a full personal computer running the desktop version of Ubuntu.
