T-Mobile adds 1.1 million customers on back of iPhone sales

updated 10:25 am EDT, Thu August 8, 2013

iPhone already up to 29 percent of sales

T-Mobile has announced its second-quarter financial results, revealing that it sold 4.3 million smartphones during the period. More significantly it added 1.1 million new customers, a vast improvement over Q2 2012, when it suffered a loss of about 200,000 subscribers. The company's revenues grew 8.6 percent year-over-year.

Much of the improvement is credited to T-Mobile's adoption of the iPhone, which went on sale at the carrier April 12th. "Since the April 12th launch, iPhone sales have accounted for approximately 29% of T-Mobile's branded gross customer additions and upgrade smartphone sales, excluding MetroPCS," the company states. T-Mobile was the last major US carrier to sign an iPhone deal with Apple.

Prior to official iPhone sales, the carrier was regularly bleeding subscribers. In the past other US carriers -- such as Verizon and Sprint -- suffered the same fate. AT&T continues to host the most iPhone subscribers, since it enjoyed a monopoly in the US for the first three years of the device's existence.
