Samsung gaining ground as Apple display supplier

updated 01:21 pm EDT, Wed August 7, 2013

Legal troubles having no effect

Despite legal battles between the two companies, Samsung is actually gaining ground as a display supplier for Apple, says NPD DisplaySearch. Samsung shipped more 9.7-inch iPad panels in April and June than Apple's other major display partner, LG Display. NPD notes moreover that Apple been increasing its orders since January; whereas it picked up 2.3 million panels from Samsung in the first quarter, shipments rose to over 4.1 million in Q2.

Samsung is also expected to supply 7.9-inch panels for a second-generation iPad mini. To date, LG Display has been the biggest supplier of Mini panels. It remains uncertain if the new Mini will upgrade to a Retina display, but if so it's rumored that LG and Japan Display will be joining Samsung.

An industry official claims that a reason for the shift is that Apple is having trouble securing panels from other companies like Sharp and AU Optronics. Retina displays can be difficult to manufacture, particularly in the quantities that Apple needs to handle an international launch.
