Nokia rumored to launch quad-core Windows Phone phablet this year

updated 06:27 am EDT, Wed August 7, 2013

Larger than 5-inch 1080p display touted, possible launch in September

Nokia could be launching its first Windows Phone phablet later this year, according to a new rumor. The device is also said to be the first of a "new era" of quad-core Nokia Lumia smartphones, potentially increasing the performance when compared to dual-core device launches from the company, such as the Lumia 1020.

The high resolution of the device would in theory be ushered in by the GDR3 update for Windows Phone, which is said to be coming soon. While story sources claim that the phablet would have a 1080p-resolution display, bringing it in line with other high-resolution devices, the size of the screen itself remains unknown, though My Nokia Blog believes it to measure more than five inches diagonally.

While a phablet or tablet has been rumored in the past, Nokia has yet to actually release such a device. A two-day event in New York in late September could be the venue of a major announcement such as this, though the event itself has not been confirmed by the company.
