HTC Desire 500 quad-core mid-range handset starts global rollout

The HTC Desire 500 has started its global rollout in the UK after its Taiwanese launch. The Desire 500 is one of the first mid-range smartphone to feature a quad-core processor in the form of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 200, which is clocked at 1.2GHz. After the UK, the device will start to spread to other European markets, with some also getting the option for a dual-SIM version.

Although HTC has dropped the aluminum finish that features in its high-end One series of smartphones for its more familiar polycarbonate materials, the device still incorporates the company's now trademark stylistic touches. Also missing is its BoomSound dual front-facing stereo speakers, however it runs the same Sense 5.0 Android-based OS as its more expensive stable mates and includes other software enhancements including the BlinkFeed live social feed aggregation homescreen.

In addition to the quad-core CPU, it also incorporates an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and an LED flash. Like HTC's higher-end devices, the camera sensor includes back side illumination while it also processes photos using HTC's dedicated ImageChip that also supports shooting photos in a burst mode. It centers on a 4.3-inch WVGA display and comes with a 3G HSPA radio, with power supplied by an 1800mAh battery. We will update you when it reaches the states, which is currently slated to arrive by the end of August.
