Amazon opens Mac, Windows software download store in United Kingdom

updated 07:47 am EDT, Wed August 7, 2013

First expansion outside of US, could lead to launches in other countries

Amazon has opened up its software downloads store in the United Kingdom. The new store, providing downloads for both PC and Mac, expands the original software store it launched in the United States a few years ago, and strongly suggests that the online retailer will be providing similar purchase options for software in other countries in the future.

While the store has a considerable number of products available in the US version, the UK menu seems relatively sparse for an opening. Where the US lists 1,372 results for Mac software downloads, the UK lists less than a hundred, with the bulk made up of Microsoft Office products and Adobe items. It is a similar story for Mac games, though both of these, as well as the Windows versions, will increase in number over time. Just as in the US version, customers will be able to purchase product codes for Origin and Xbox Live, and can also re-download titles or manage product keys through the Your Games & Software Library section.

Amazon has been relatively slow in offering software and game downloads to its customers outside of the US, and has fallen behind other existing and internationally established systems such as Origin and Steam, as well as operating system-specific app stores.
