Amazon discounts 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, possible new model launch soon

Discount of $40 for tablet suggests refreshed line for anniversary of launch

Amazon has dropped the price of its seven-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet in the United States. The sudden drop in price of $40 for the tablet is a possible sign that the retailer is trying to reduce stock in the device ahead of an expected launch of a rumored device range refresh in September, the anniversary of the HD version's launch.

The store shows the 16GB tablet as costing $159 with special offers displayed instead of its previous $199 price tag, and is discounted for a limited and unspecified duration according to Android Authority. The same version without special offers costs $174, while the 32GB model costs $189 with offers, $204 without.

While the discount could be a stock-reduction measure in preparation of new Kindle Fire HD tablets with improved displays and higher specifications, it could also be the retailer's attempt at fending off the updated Google Nexus 7, revealed late last month. The discount does not appear to be available in international versions of the Amazon store, nor does it seem to affect the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD, something which is also suggested as being due for replacement.
