16MP Coolpix S6600 compact camera includes Wi-Fi, gesture controls

Nikon has launched a pair of cameras in its Coolpix compact camera range. The Coolpix S6600 offers a 16-megapixel backside-illuminated CMOS sensor with lens-shift vibration reduction and 12x optical zoom, while the Coolpix L620 is equipped with an 18.1-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor with 14x optical zoom and a similar vibration reduction system.

The S6600 is the first in the S-series of cameras to have a flip-out LCD screen, and is able to record Full HD 1080i video with stereo audio. Equipped with gesture controls to remotely control the camera when taking self portraits, it also provides a number of image retouching functions including special effects and glamor options, and can be remotely controlled and accessed from a mobile device over Wi-Fi.

The more-advanced Coolpix L620 covers from a wide-angle 25mm to a 350mm telephoto equivalent, and is capable of focusing on items just 1cm (0.4 inches) away from the lens for macro photography. A target-finding autofocus and an Easy Auto mode for quick and simplified shot set-up is included, as well as 6 special effects, 8 post-shot filter effects, and red-eye correction for up to 12 people and 5 pets in a single image. Also able to record 1080p video at 60fps with stereo sound, it can play back video at half or double the speed of recording, and play back footage through its HDMI port.

Nikon will be launching its Coolpix L620 next month for 200 and $250 in the UK and the US. The Coolpix S6600 will sell for 200 in the UK in September, though a US release date and price has yet to be revealed by the company.
