Spotify Browse curated playlists offer songs by mood, moments

updated 09:23 am EDT, Mon August 5, 2013

Browse playlists reaching iOS, Android first, all Spotify platforms in future

Spotify is adding a new item to accompany its existing Discover and social features for providing new artists and songs to users. Browse consists of playlists curated by experts employed by the company, which will offer tracks based on an assortment of moods and moments, such as romance or tracks for the morning commute.

Powered by Tunigo, a company Spotify acquired in May, Browse provides around 20,000 playlists for users to listen to. Rather than the algorithm-based offerings in Discover and Radio, the playlist collection will be made up of Spotify-created lists as well as those from popular users. Chief product officer Gustav Söderström said "Our three-dimensional approach now combines the human touch with strong social features and unique technology from over five years of experience."

At the same time as announcing the Browse addition, Spotify revealed it will be rolling out a new messaging platform in the coming weeks. Messages will replace the company's current inbox, and will collect all music shared between users through the service into conversations, as well as permitting messages between users without music.

Browse will be slowly rolling out across iOS and Android initially, and will be available on all platforms in the future.
