Microsoft lops $100 off Surface Pro price through August

Like Surface RT, Surface Pro gets price cut

Microsoft is cutting the price of the Surface Pro by $100 according to the company's web site for the page. The price cut comes after it was revealed that the software giant has yet to turn a profit on its touchscreen computing devices. The $100 price cut will last through the month of August.

The Surface Pro price cut follows shortly after the company did the same for its Surface RT device. The Pro runs the full version of Windows 8, while the Surface RT runs a less capable version, Windows RT.

The Surface line, it was revealed, has made Microsoft only $853 million in revenue, less than the $900 million that Microsoft recently wrote down on the Surface RT tablet alone. Despite a considerable marketing push, the devices have failed so far to capture consumer interest. Microsoft is believed to have sold only 1.5 million Surface Pro and Surface RT tablets in the months since the devices' release.

Speaking with The Verge, Microsoft confirmed that the price cut will apply to customers in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States.

"We've been seeing great worldwide success with Surface RT pricing and keyboard-cover promotions over the past several months and are proud to offer Surface Pro at more affordable prices starting today," the company said in its statement.
