Android Device Manager already rolling out to some phones

Android's smartphone tracking feature leaking out early

The smartphone tracking feature Google revealed last week appears to be rolling out somewhat early. A number of users tell Android Central that Android Device Manager has hit their phones already, giving them the opportunity to track their phones if misplaced or stolen. The update was originally slated to begin rolling out later this month.

Android device manager will provide users with the location of their devices, along with details on when it was last used. Users will also be able to remotely activate a device's ringtone at maximum volume, even if the device has been silenced.

Should a phone prove irretrievable, users can also remotely wipe data with Android Device Manager.

In releasing the feature, Google plugged considerable hole in the security features for its Android platform. Android was the last of the major platforms to introduce such a feature. Both Apple's iOS and Microsoft's Windows Phone platforms have had a phone-tracking feature since 2010.

The feature will be available for phones running Android 2.2 Froyo or higher. Users can check to see if the update is available for them by heading to the Security section of their settings and looking at the Device administrators option. If the update has been pushed out, the Device Manager option should be visible therein.
