Google considered silly phrases to activate Glass

Google's "OK, Glass" hotword to activate its wearable computing device wasn't the only phrase the search giant considered. Googler Amanda Rosenberg recently related a story about the process the Glass developer team went through to determine the correct phrase that users would say in order to activate Google Glass. Among the considered options, silly terms like "Clap On" and "Pew pew pew."

Beyond references to 80s commercials and laser gun noises, the Glass developer team also considered "Go Go Glass," "Hear me now," "Listen up Glass," "Device, please," "Glassicus," and "Let me use Glass to."

Reportedly, coming up with the correct phrase was the easy part of the process. The team then went on to spend a good deal of time testing and implementing the phrase, getting the device to understand that that was the term that would activate it. As with Google-owned Motorola's Moto X, the voice recognition aspect will be always on, with the device listening for its owner's voice at all times. Getting the device to recognize its owner's voice in a crowded room, then, is an essential aspect of the development process.

Announced last year at Google I/O, the run-up to Glass' wider release has been marked by updates for the pioneer edition already in the hands of early adopters. Google has begun expanding the early access program for friends and acquaintances of those that already possess the device. A wider consumer launch is expected for early 2014.
