Riccio taking antennas and Wi-Fi, sources say
While Bob Mansfield looks after Apple's special projects, two senior VPs -- Hardware leader Dan Riccio and Operations head Jeff Williams -- are handling his former duties as senior VP of Technologies, sources say. Riccio's tasks now include overseeing antenna design for mobile and the Wi-Fi components in all of Apple's major products. The situation is a reversal of the one that brought Mansfield out of his recent retirement, in which he was asked to transition wireless teams over to Riccio.
Williams, meanwhile, is reportedly helping Mansfield with management of the special projects teams. One of these teams is believed to be the one for the iWatch, Mansfield's rumored focus at the moment.
One source says that there has been too little formal internal communications about the reasons for the management shakeup. The new roles have, however, allegedly been made clear, and several sources say that during the past two months, Mansfield has been devoting more of his time to chips and some wireless tech, delegating some of his teams to other executives. At the same time, Mansfield is thought to want to retire to his new home on the California coast, even if he is dedicated to Apple and may contribute to the company even after a permanent retirement.
